Should Aston Martin finally sack Lance Stroll in favor of Carlos Sainz?

Lance Stroll has raced for Aston Martin since 2019 (when it was Racing Point) after his father Lawrence Stroll acquired Force India. The 25-year-old had shown glimpses of brilliance over the years including his pole position at the 2020 Turkish GP. However, the Canadian driver has failed to truly establish himself as a top driver on the grid.

Despite the lack of strong finishes, Stroll has remained at the Silverstone-based team. On the other hand Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez have been forced out of the British team to ensure a place for Lance Stroll. It is clear that Lawrence Stroll‘s influence as the Chairman of Aston Martin has played an important role in his son’s tenure at the team.

For 2025, several drivers are out of contract in the busy driver market. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz has come out as the top driver in the silly season. The Spaniard will be replaced by Lewis Hamilton at Maranello next season. Presently, Sainz has a few options, however, the 29-year-old could’ve been the perfect pick for Aston Martin. As such, Should Aston Martin finally sack Lance Stroll in favor of Carlos Sainz?

Lance Stroll running out of excuses

The Canadian driver suffered from an injury before the start of the 2023 season. Nevertheless, Lance Stroll managed to participate at the first race despite being in pain. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old failed to convert his determination into results over the course of the season. On the other hand, Fernando Alonso scored a handful of podiums for Aston Martin last season.

Lance Stroll has been overshadowed by Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso in the past couple of seasons. Competing alongside world-champion teammates is no easy feat. However, Charles Leclerc and George Russell have managed to outperform Vettel and Lewis Hamilton respectively as teammates.

Unfortunately, Stroll has not made a mark in Formula 1 over the years. The Canadian driver is yet to silence critics despite being in his eighth season in 2024. As such, Aston Martin could be forced to make a harsh call on Lance Stroll’s future.

Carlos Sainz a perfect long-term option for Aston Martin

Carlos Sainz has established himself as a future world champion. The Spanish driver has excelled in 2024 with an impressive victory at the Australian GP. Sainz has showcased that he can take the fight to Max Verstappen and Red Bull given the right car. This would be perfect for Aston Martin which aspires to win the title in the coming years.

With Fernando Alonso at the age of 42, the Silverstone-based team needs a top quality driver for the long term. Carlos Sainz could bring his insights from Ferrari and serve as the ideal lead driver once Alonso retires. Moreover, Sainz and Alonso have shared friendly relations as the Ferrari driver idolizes the two-time world champion.

It remains unlikely that Aston Martin decide to replace Lance Stroll as long as Lawrence Stroll retains control. However, if the Canadian driver continues to score underwhelming results, shareholders could force the Chairman to finally oust his son. The British carmaker’s Le Mans Hypercar program could be the perfect fit to sideline the 25-year-old while saving face public. Fans of Carlos Sainz would be hoping that the Silverstone-based team does sign up the Spanish driver for next year.
