Wrestling phenom Bo Nickal ‘s placement as the UFC 300 main card opener was quite a talking point. Chael Sonnen , Max Holloway , Daniel Cormier , and even opponent Cody Brundage had their takes on it. Nickal proved his worth by coming out as the victor. However, he has a long road ahead of him to title contention.

So says Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo in their new MMA Weekly show. Nickal (6-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) remained unbeaten by defeating Cody Brundage. Despite a minimal record, the NCAA national champ had opened up a -1450 bettor’s favorite ahead of UFC 300. Bo Nickal still sticks to the narrative of thinking he is a good matchup against someone like Khamzat Chimaev. ‘Triple C’ does not agree with that notion.

Don’t put that pressure on you, if you’re disappointed in your performance, because quite honestly...I do believe you could be a future champ at 185 pounds – but you are not ready for the top 10...If they put you up against big bodies like Marvin Vettori, who have good jiu-jitsu, big dudes and could also wrestle – even a guy like Paulo ‘Borrachinha’ (Costa) … I mean [to Kamaru Usman], he’s not quite ready for that top 10. Henry Cejudo via Pound 4 Pound Podcast

Nickal has been a subject of contradiction lately. Despite submitting Brundage, he was unhappy with a not-so-dominant performance and booed himself. On the other hand, he remains too sure of his mettle, challenging Chimaev. Even Kamaru Usman, Cejudo’s co-host, advised Nickal to stay grounded. Both felt Nickal remained at least ten fights away from a UFC middleweight title shot.

Nickal has also called out #12 ranking middleweight Anthony ‘Fluffy’ Hernandez, who’s on a 5-win streak. ‘Fluffy’ will fight Roman Dolidze at UFC 302 on June 1. Cejudo urged that the college wrestling standout should ground himself further and not look to face big names like Sean Strickland , Robert Whittaker , or even Paulo Costa . It remains to be seen who Nickal will face next in the UFC.

Bo Nickal does not regret his feud with Jordan Burroughs, doubles down on his insults

Opening up the main card, Bo Nickal was one of UFC 300’s big winners. Nickal has had a prime feud going on with wrestling legend Jordan Burroughs . The beef started with Nickal claiming that Burroughs did not respect his alum, Penn State Nittany Lions.

Recently, it went to another level when Burroughs joined Daniel Cormier as a commentator for the NCAA wrestling championship. Speaking from the ESPN commentary booth, Burroughs told DC that he’d go for the injured leg of Carter Starocci in a sudden clinch. Nickal and Penn State wrestler Carter Starocci took shots at Burroughs for his commentary. Recently, Nickal addressed the incident and gave his side of the story to Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour.

I’m good with everybody, I think that I didn’t like what he had to say about one of my teammates and close friends, so I let that be known. We talked about it briefly [Daniel Cormier] He was like, ‘Well, I was the one that asked the question,’ and I was like, ‘Well, he’s the one that answered it.’ So if you’re going to answer the question like a big boy, then you’ve got to take the heat too. Bo Nickal, who won three NCAA titles at Penn State, labeled him a fraud for his intentions. Post-UFC 300, now he says he has no intention of recanting his statements. The middleweight prospect also said that during UFC 300 Fight Week, he received massive positive fan feedback. All in all, this scuffle doesn’t seem to have a clear end or solution.
